Rewards cards: FAQs

Are rewards taxable?

Rewards earned by spending are treated as rebates, not income. Bonuses earned without spending (like some referral bonuses) can be taxable.

Points or cash back?

Cash back is simpler and always worth face value. Points can be worth more with travel transfers but require effort to redeem well.

Do rewards expire?

On most major cards, rewards last while the account is open and in good standing — but closing the card can forfeit them, so redeem first.
